Every GTIN — whether it's a 12-digit UPC-A on a retail item, a 13-digit EAN, or a 14-digit case code in a GS1-128 barcode — ends with a check digit computed by the GS1 Mod-10 algorithm. Reading the number right to left and starting with the digit before the check digit, each digit is multiplied alternately by 3 and 1; the results are summed, and the check digit is the amount needed to reach the next multiple of ten. Scanners and receiving systems use it to catch typos and misreads: a case with a wrong check digit will fail validation at the distribution center.
For PTI produce case labels, the GTIN-14 is built from an indicator digit (the packaging level, usually 1 for a case), your GS1 company prefix and item reference, and the check digit. GTINs are licensed through GS1; this calculator validates and computes check digits but cannot issue GTINs.
